Following is a hole by hole commentary on all 18 holes at Lanier Golf Club.

Hole 1, Par 5

A great staring hole, this par 5 keeps you honest early in the round. A generous landing area allows you to rip it off the tee. Hit the cart path on the left for an extra 20 yards. Long hitters can hit this green in two. Otherwise, a lay up is necessary left of the lake to hit a short iron approach shot.

Hole 2, Par 3

A
great little par 3 that allows you to hit a short iron. Key to this hole is staying below the hole to avoid treacherous downhill or sidehill put on a very fast green.

Hole 3, Par 4

One of the more difficult holes at Lanier, this slight dogleg uphill par 4 fools many people when hitting their second shot. Allow for one more club as you hit into a two tier green. When the pin is on top, hit more club to get on the top shelf.

Hole 4, Par 5

This slight dogleg to the left par 5 is a great risk/reward par 5. Long hitters can reach this hole in two. However,  most will be laying up with a middle iron to hit a short iron or wedge into this two tier green. When greens are fast, beware of placing the ball on the upper tier with a lower pin position. A fun par 5 that will yield a birde or even eagle for well played shots.

Hole 5, Par 4

The most demanding driving hole at Lanier, this uphill, narrow par 4 will test your concentration. Left is dead and some have yet to emerge from the dense forrest. Stay right off the tee shot and take a little more club to an uphill second shot.

Hole 6, Par 4

This short par 4 requires accuracy off the tee to avoid the traps on the left and the lake on the right. Take a shorter club off the tee for the longer hitters to insure a short iron approach to a fairly level green. Lose it right and you'll have to deal with the signature oak tree that will require a lofted approach over the tree.

Hole 7, Par 4

A short dogleg left left that requires only a 230 yard tee shot. Out of bounds left and creek to the right requires you to respect this little hole that has derailed many a good round for failing to give it due respect. Short iron approach should allow for birdie opportunity.

Hole 8, Par 3

Not a particularly difficult par 3, but not the easiest green to hit due to the wind that usually blows left to right. Top right pin position is the Sunday placement and requires at least one extra club to get to the back side.

Hole 9, Par 4

No doubt the most demanding of all the par 4s on the course, this uphill par 4 is the number one handicap hole and requires a strong tee shot to reach the top of the hill. Downhill second shot requires distance control to get on the right tier of the green. A ball on the back of the green with a front pin is a guaranteed three putt. Beware of your placement on this very slick side hill putting green. Take four and run!

Hole 10, Par 3

A very picturesque long par 3 to a large green. Slight undulating green can be challenging when putting from left to right. A strong par three requiring a medium to long iron for most.

Hole 11, Par 4

This dogleg right requires you to move the ball from left to right for the best approach. Downhill lie complicates your approach to an uphill shot to a two tiered green. Putting from the back to the front can mean three put most of the time when greens are fast. Take one extra club to this uphill green.

Hole 12, Par 4

Dogleg right par 4 requires straight away tee shot with a slight fade for maximum approach to this green. One of the most amazing holes that plays 2 clubs shorter than the distance due to the downhill green. You don't want to be over the green unless you like sixes. Guaranteed for most if you are over, right or left of this green. Are you scared yet? Respect this hole and take your four.

Hole 13, Par 5

A horsehoe shaped dogleg left par 5, your tee shot requires accuracy as you hit through the narrow shoot surrounded by tall trees on both sides. Stay away from the woods and creek down the left side. Rare for long hitters to hit this green in two due to the dogleft left angle and the elevation. Play it as a three shot hole and take a little extra club for your short iron approach and you might come away with birdie.

Hole 14, Par 4

Probably the best hole on the golf course. This short par 4 looks like you should eat it up. However, your tee shot can find the bunkers on the right or the woods on the left. Long hitters like to muscle it down to try and get on the green. However, few balls end up on this green as the bunkers protect it well. Many a short iron to this green has resulted in five or more. Green provides additional defense due to sloping angle from back to front. When greens are fast, beware that you don't leave your ball above the hole. A great little par 4.

Hole 15, Par 4

A long but playable par 4 allows you ample room for your tee shot setting up a slightly uphill approach to a two tiered green. Avoid going over the hill to insure the best approach from the top of the ridge. Hitting it past the cart path brings both hazzards on the left and right into play. However, most players won't have that problem.

Hole 16, Par 5
Time to lick your chops. This dogleg right par 5 is the easiest hole on the course as long as you play it from the fairway. Miss the fairway and you looking at 5 or more. Hit two big shots and you got a good shot at eagle here. Two tier green provides good pin placements just above the bunkers.

Hole 17, Par 3

The hardest par 3 on the course is not the hole you want to have to make birdie on in order to stay in the match. This long par 3 requires a very straight approach to a large green. The wind usually comes from the left. Beware of short siding yourself when the pin is left. Ball in the bunker or left of green is guaranteed 4 due to the slope of the green. A great par 3.

Hole 18, Par 4

This medium length par 4 is a great little finishing hole as it  requires you to hit the shots. Hit it down the middle and you have a medium or short iron in. However, bunkers on the right and left and trees on the right keep you honest. Nothing unusual about the green. Hit it on and make your 3!
